How to Support Your Child’s Mental Health

Child mental health is a sensitive issue. Nobody likes to think about a child with depression or anxiety but these are very real issues for some children and their families. If your child has been suffering in any way there are things you can do to help.

  • Listen

Listening is very important. Children who feel heard are more likely to share their feelings. Try not to interject with comparisons about your own life – remember that their experience is different to your own.

  • Provide a safe space

This means not just a pleasant room in a warm house but a space where your child knows they will not face your anger or distress when they share their troubles. You may be feeling worried but it’s best to show strength to your child and don’t let them know you’re upset.

  • Encourage them to get out into the fresh air

This one is not always easy, especially with teenagers but the benefits of fresh air and green trees is actually scientifically proven. Depression in particular can be alleviated a little with regular walks in the open air…especially among trees.

Finally, ensure that you keep up a good dialogue with their teachers. School can be difficult for children who might be going through a hard time with their mental health so it’s vital that they also receive support at school.

This international school in London for example ensures that parents are kept connected to their child’s school life though regular contact. Keeping an open dialogue with your child’s teachers can be invaluable when it comes to supporting their mental health.

Children are sometimes two distinct people – who they are at home and who they are at school can be quite different.
